We discussed being filled with the Spirit last Sunday. I want to follow up and encourage us all to appropriate the fullness of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives. It’s really very simple. Here’s how:
How to be filled with the Holy Spirit:
Desire: Matthew 5:6 promises those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.
Confess: 1 John 1:9 promises that if we confess our sins God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Ask: 1 John 5:14,15 promises that if we ask according to the will of God that He hears us and will answer. We know it’s the will of God to be filled with the Spirit according to Ephesians 5:18; Luke 11:9-13; John 7:37-39.
Receive: We received Jesus by faith and we receive the filling of the Holy Spirit by faith. Look at Luke 11:9-13 again. Suggested prayer: Heavenly Father, I come to You in repentance asking Your forgiveness and cleansing of my sins. Thank You that You have forgiven me of my sins through Christ’s death on the cross. I confess Jesus’ Lordship over every area of my life. I now ask that You fill me with the Holy Spirit as Your Word commands, and as You promised You would do if I asked in faith. Thank You for filling me in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
The purpose for being filled with the Holy Spirit is threefold: (1) to live a victorious Christian life; (2) to serve Christ with the talent, skills, abilities, and gifts He’s graced you with; and (3) to be a strong witness for Christ.
